In a city rental, we will arrange to go with the customer to the respective police station and guide throughout the process of paying the fine. We will check periodically on the government’s system for potential fines on the rented motorbike’s licence plate.

For road-trip rentals, we will check in the government’s system by the time of return of the bike. In occasions, a fine may be issued up to 1 month after the infraction, hence it is possible that the bike was returned by then. Should it be the case, we will reach out to the customer to make a charge on their credit card to cover the cost of the fine. We will of course provide the necessary documentation.

PLEASE, READ OUR FINES DISCLAIMER UPDATED ON JUNE 2026 HERE. This document has all the information you need about how we handle fines.

You may convert a foreign licence into a Vietnamese one or apply for a lifetime licence if you are fluent in Vietnamese.

A temporary residence card (TRC) is required for both of these cases. Tourists can drive with an international driving permit. Check all valid driving licences here.

Are they supposed to write you a ticket and then you pay at local police station?

The official way is: you get a ticket by the police at the stop.

For this to happen, they first tell you the infraction and depending on the case they show proof (speeding, forgotten signal, illegal turn, etc.). Then, they hold on your licence or document available in exchange for the paper fine.

On the appointed date, you head to police station to provide the remaining documents and confirm the fine. The fine can either be paid online on the government’s website or at the indicated bank in cash.

The police may confiscate the bike should you commit a proven infraction that warrants a confiscation, such as excessive speed, alcohol content in the blood or not having a driving licence. In these cases, you will need to work with us to get the bike back from the police, in which case the customer will be responsible to cover all fees of the potential fine and other related fees.

The police may stop you for an infraction, an administrative check (documents) or for an alcohol test. In case of an infraction, request proof of the infraction and then only provide your documents to the police. In an administrative check, you must provide the copy of registration as well as your licence (if the bike requires a licence to be driven), the rental contract could be needed as supporting documents for the copy of registration since the originals are normally required. In case of difficulties, give us a call to mediate with the police.
