What do I need to rent a bike?

To make a booking, we require the following:

  • A picture of your passport
  • Your address in Vietnam.
  • Your phone number in Vietnam. Alternatively, a foreign WhatsApp number works.
  • A refundable deposit
  • The rental fee

Can I leave my passport as a deposit?

No, at The Extra Mile we have a strict rule not to leave personal/important documents as deposit. The deposit is meant primarily to cover the cost of damages if any, hence it must be a monetary value we can use.

How early can I make a booking?

At The Extra Mile, we are frequently in high demand, hence we do not accept bookings with over 45 days of anticipation unless certain conditions are met.
Due to the diversity of models we possess and the rarity of a few of the most demanded ones, bookings with over 45 days of anticipation may be accepted with the condition of a potential replacement to the closest available model. We may offer a different model of the same category, for example if you book a Honda Winner X, but within 45 days of the booking’s starting date it becomes unavailable, we would offer a Yamaha Exciter 155 or perhaps an MT-15 as a free upgrade. Additionally, bookings with over 45 days of anticipation will require the full payment of the rental fee to lock in the bike. This payment is only refundable in a 50% matching our early return policy.
However, depending on the request, we may simply refuse an anticipated booking and request the customer to make the booking within the 45 days range. This is especially common for our rarest and most demanded models.

Bookings made within 45 days of anticipation may require a pre-deposit of 1,000,000 VND depending on the season and the demand at the time. Bookings made within 1 month do not require a pre-deposit.

What are the most popular motorbike models for city rentals?

If you are a foreigner wanting a spacious motorbike, then the PCX is for you; if you want a simple bike to go from A to B, then the Airblade it is; if you prefer something smaller and female oriented, then the Vision is the answer.

Do I need a driving licence to rent a motorbike?

Yes, you must have either a Vietnamese driving licence or an international one. (read full article). Else, you can rent our electric or 50 CC options that do not require a driving licence.

What are the differences between city rental and road trip rental?

City rentals are aimed at rentals staying within the city. We offer city rentals with a minimum of 2 days. Consider the range of 20km to 50km per day, with a total of 1,500km per month. For rentals under a month, we use the total limit of 50km/day, hence a 15 days rental will have a limit of 750kms.

Road-trip motorbike rentals are charged on a daily rate and have unlimited kilometers. You may leave the city and travel Vietnam. You cannot take our bikes across borders. The prices are higher, but this reflects the distance increase and the way we handle breakdowns and difficult situations that may occur outside the city.

What is the cancellation policy for motorbike rentals, will I get my deposit back?

We have a flexible cancellation policy. Bookings made before 45 days of the starting date require the full payment of the rental fee to confirm the booking. These bookings are refundable in 50%, this is due to the higher risk we take when holding a bike with anticipation as we will be refusing several rental opportunities. Bookings made within 45 to 31 days of the starting date will require a non-refundable pre-deposit of 1,000,000 VND. Bookings made within 30 days of the starting date will not require a pre-deposit, hence are not charged in case of a cancellation.

Can I extend my rental period if needed?

Our rental contracts include a renewal date rather than an end date. The customer may keep the same rental and renew with us, we will then confirm the next period’s rental amount.

Can you deliver/pick-up at the airport?

We can arrange to meet the customer at the gas station exiting the airport for free. For better convenience, the customer may opt to pay a 200,000 VND fee for us to deliver inside the airport in the parking area.

What is the process for delivery or pick-up at the airport?

We will follow the flight’s tracking to estimate the correct time of delivery, we will target arrival at the parking lot for 30-45 minutes after landing time.

We will meet the customer at Starbucks and take you to the bike in the parking lot to deliver the bike. The customer must pay the parking fee which can be from 6,000 to 10,000 VND upon leaving the airport. We will charge a 200,000 VND fee to deliver and wait within the airport’s parking lot. We will charge 100,000 VND to pick up at an arranged time within the parking lot upon returning the bike.

Where should I park?

The safest way to park is to park in a parking lot with a ticket.

Alternatively, several shops have a security guard that will guide you into parking. In some cases, shops do not have a security guard nor clear parking space. We recommend keeping the bike in a location where you can keep an eye on it.

In any case, do not leave the bike unattended on the streets, in Vietnam bikes not properly parked get stolen easily.

Be mindful that locals frequently leave bikes in some street areas, that is illegal parking and easily subject to theft or police confiscation.

What should I do if I lose a parking ticket?

The security will have a process to authorize the bike pick up, usually the verification of ownership documents and an ID. It is possible that you may need to reach out to us for confirmation of ownership.

What happens if the bike gets stolen?

In case of theft, the customer will be responsible to compensate us for the value of the bike based on the rental contract. We will support via the legal way with a police report and other documents needed, however from our experience stolen bikes never get found by the local police. The only way to prevent theft is to park safely and never leave the bike unattended on the street.

Do you offer any discounts for multiple motorbike rentals?

Yes, we offer group discounts. Depending on the quantity and models selected we will make an offer for a group rental.

Can I travel by motorbike?

Yes, from 2025 we allow all bikes to access our road trip rentals. We have also added the damage waiver for the best convenience of the customer.

Can I cross borders with the motorbike?

No, we do not allow our bikes to go out of Vietnam, and in any case the procedure is very complicated and requires the legal owner to do it.

What are the electric scooters available for rent at The Extra Mile?

As of 2025, The Extra Mile gradually stopped working with Vinfast due to an outrageously low and decreasing quality of service. We now opt for the Dat Bike Quantum S3, a premium commuter that offers more power, comfort and high-tech features. However, this electric model requires a driving licence.

What makes The Extra Mile different from other companies?

We try and separate ourselves out by having well-maintained, high-quality motorbikes. That might seem like a generic answer, but the market is full of cheap and cheerful scooter rentals at very low prices. Many of these companies are maintaining their fleet of motorbikes on shoestring budgets.

We want our riders to be proud of the motorbike they are driving, and confident in its reliability. Our maintenance intervals are on a schedule, rather than a “fix when broken” basis.

We also offer premium motorbikes and scooters that other companies simply don’t provide.

Ultimately, we want to charge a premium for a premium service!

Would you refuse service?

The Extra Mile reserves the right to refuse service for a few different reasons. As our demand drastically increased, frequently meeting our maximum capacity is a common happening for us. As a result, we permit ourselves to be selective with our customers in certain situations.
As a general rule, we do not tolerate any act of discrimination or offense towards our staff. This is especially valid regarding racism or xenophobia against Vietnamese nationals. At any moment, should we estimate that the beavior of a customer is not tolerable or could make our staff uncomfortable to the level of raising a concern, we will refuse service without the need of providing a detailed explanation.

Other reasons we may refuse service for are the potential mismatch between the customer expectation and the service we wish to provide. For example, should a customer show clear signs of attempting a road trip while requesting a city-rental contract, we will possibly refuse the booking.
Another example is the price expectation, for which we do not accept negotiations. We are free to offer deals as we see fit, however bargaining efforts will not be successful since we normally run at maximum capacity.

Damage Waiver and Crashing the bike

This is an optional insurance payment. Customers who choose this option are not responsible for damage costs on the motorbike. As long as the bike is returned, the security deposit will be refunded.

Note that the loss of the motorbike or any accessories is not considered damage. If lost, the items must be reimbursed according to the values outlined in the rental contract.

Not included in the damage waiver are flat tires of all types and damages to the accessories, and burnt clutch plates. So, for example any damage on the storage boxes, phone holders, extra lights and to the clutch plates are excluded from the damage waiver.

Clutch plates are excluded from the damage waiver, as these can only get damaged through poor driving skills.

The Extra Mile introduced the Damage Waiver on all its bikes starting in 2025.

Border crossing by motorbike

We do not allow any border crossing. Customers will not be able to cross a border with our rental bikes since we control the ownership.

Can I use the train or bus to send a motorbike to another location?

Only if agreed in advance, the customer may make their own arrangements to send by train or bus. In which case, The Extra Mile will pay the security deposit back only after receiving the bike, accessories and assessing its condition. Ideally, customers should use our extensive network covering the most important cities of the country for a smoother pick up or return.

Do I get a refund if I return the bike early?

Yes, we offer a partial reimbursement on early refunds at 50% of the unused days.

How does the deposit return work with damage waiver?

The damage waiver does not include a few items such as accessories and clutch plates.
So, when the bike is returned, we will check for potential damages on the accessories (phone holder, storage boxes, etc.) to retain the cost of fixing or replacing them from the security deposit.

The remaining amount is returned to the customer.

 FAQ about fixing and maintenance

Who is responsible for the bike’s maintenance?

We handle all maintenance and fixing of our bikes. Customers shall not handle it themselves unless explicitly agreed with us.

What do I do in case of a mechanical problem?

Call us or message us first to report the problem. We will arrange to pick up the bike with issues and we will provide a replacement in the meantime. We will exchange back after solving the problem.

Do you attend 24/7 in case of an emergency?

We do during our working hours of 9am to 6pm. Overtime support is provided within the range of 8am to 9pm. Outside of this range, we will first provide support online or by phone to find a convenient solution. Most times the solution is parking the bike in a nearby parking lot to solve it the following morning. Should there be no available immediate solution and if the case is critical, then we will come to support.

Do I need to pay for overtime support?

If the case falls into our responsibility due to a mechanical problem or error of maintenance, we will cover the respective costs. If we find out the issue is due to a user error, then there will be an overtime fee. If the customer requests a normal (non-emergency) task in overtime, we will then ask for an overtime fee.

What do I do in the case of punctures?

There are mechanics everywhere in Vietnam, and they are cheap. The word to type is vá vỏ and the rate is usually around 20k to 50k. The customer is responsible for paying for this.

If you really are stuck, you can call us and we will rescue you for our standard callout fee of 150,000vnd.

What happens if I damage the bike in an accident?

We will assess the fixing costs and your deposit will be used towards those costs. If the deposit covers, we will return the remaining deposit amount assuming the rental ends. If the customer wishes to keep renting, then the deposit must be completed again.

If the damage is higher than the security deposit, then the customer is responsible for completing the damage. We will not claim extra penalties for loss of use of the bike for future bookings, we only require the customer to pay for the damage caused to the bike during the rental.

FAQ about insurance

Do I need insurance when renting a motorbike in Vietnam?

The bike will have compulsory government insurance, but it doesn’t cover much. Travel insurance or personal insurance is recommended.
The Extra Mile offers Damage Waiver from 2025, this covers all damages to the bikes.

What does the government insurance cover?

Government insurance is used by the traffic police should there be an accident and both parties fail to find a friendly resolution. Should government insurance be activated, the traffic police will oversee communicating the final resolution to both parties.

Is there professional insurance for rental bikes?

No, in Vietnam insurance companies do not accept insuring rental bikes, hence the responsibility of damages relies on the authorized driver.
For this reason, we offer damage waiver ourselves. Customers may select and pay for this option on top of the rental fee.

Will my private insurance cover me in case of an accident?

Your private insurance should cover your personal injuries and perhaps material damage if you are riding legally. Our bikes comply with the necessary requirements, the rider is then responsible for having the appropriate driving licence.

FAQ about police

What are the traffic laws in Vietnam for motorbikes?

Although many first time foreigners in Vietnam see a giant mess when they arrive in Vietnam and look at the traffic; there are strict traffic laws with detailed fines and regulations. We wrote a comprehensive article (link here) on that matter that you can use as a reference.

What to do if the Vietnamese traffic police stops you?

The police may stop you for an infraction, an administrative check (documents) or for an alcohol test. In case of an infraction, request proof of the infraction and then only provide your documents to the police. In an administrative check, you must provide the copy of registration as well as your licence (if the bike requires a licence to be driven), the rental contract could be needed as supporting documents for the copy of registration since the originals are normally required. In case of difficulties, give us a call to mediate with the police.

What happens if the police confiscated the bike?

The police may confiscate the bike should you commit a proven infraction that warrants a confiscation, such as excessive speed, alcohol content in the blood or not having a driving licence. In these cases, you will need to work with us to get the bike back from the police, in which case the customer will be responsible to cover all fees of the potential fine and other related fees.

What is the official process to pay the fines legitimately?

Are they supposed to write you a ticket and then you pay at local police station?

The official way is: you get a ticket by the police at the stop.

For this to happen, they first tell you the infraction and depending on the case they show proof (speeding, forgotten signal, illegal turn, etc.). Then, they hold on your licence or document available in exchange for the paper fine.

On the appointed date, you head to police station to provide the remaining documents and confirm the fine. The fine can either be paid online on the government’s website or at the indicated bank in cash.

How do I get a Vietnamese driving licence?

You may convert a foreign licence into a Vietnamese one or apply for a lifetime licence if you are fluent in Vietnamese.

A temporary residence card (TRC) is required for both of these cases. Tourists can drive with an international driving permit. Check all valid driving licences here.
