Should I return a full fuel tank?
Yes, if your rental starts and ends in Ho Chi Minh City.
Not for one-way rentals. We will provide 2L of fuel. In this case, you only need to return enough fuel for us to drive the motorbike back from the shipping location. This is due to the shipping services draining the fuel out of motorbikes before transport.
Can I return in a different city to the one I booked?
The short is yes, but you need to view the travel section of our website and it will display all the possible options. You can return in most cities, but you can only pickup in a few.
Can I cross borders with the motorbike?
No, we do not allow our bikes to go out of Vietnam, and in any case the procedure is very complicated and requires the legal owner to do it.
Where are your offices located?
Our offices are located in HCMC and we arrange the shipping from Phu Quoc ourselves.
For Da Nang and Hanoi, our customers may pick up or drop off at Tigit Motorbikes.
Drop off is possible at Da Lat and Hue via Tigit Motorbikes.
Drop off is possible at Hoi An via Flamingo Travel, and Ha Giang via Style Motorbikes.
At Phong Nha, we can arrange the drop off via Phong Nha Farmstay.
Check out our disclaimer about one-way rentals here: https://theextramile.co/one-way-rental-disclaimer/

In which case, The Extra Mile will pay the security deposit back only after receiving the bike, accessories and assessing its condition. Ideally, customers should use our extensive network covering the most important cities of the country for a smoother pick up or return.

If we opt to replace a motorbike that has had a major crash with a replacement motorbike, then the customer is responsible for paying for another damage waiver on the replacement motorbike.
If The Extra Mile manages to fix a major crash (we will let you know if we think the damages are major), then we may ask you to pay for another damage waiver or return the rental motorbike to end the rental.
Do I need a driving licence to rent a motorbike?

How to verify damages when I return the bike?
Upon providing the bike to the customer, our staff will take sufficient pictures to document the external condition of the bike. Upon returning the bike, these pictures are compared with the bike’s condition to verify whether there is any new damage.
If you have the damage waiver, you won’t need to pay for any damages to the motorbike.
What happens if my bike has an issue during the rental?
Contact us immediately in case of an issue with the bike.
In a city rental, we will quickly provide a replacement bike to the customer while taking the rented bike for a check. Once the issue fixed, the original bike will be exchanged back for the replacement bike with the customer. The replacement bike may not be of the same category as the originally rented bike. For example, we may provide an automatic bike while you are renting a manual one. We will only provide a replacement that matches the driving licence requirement of the originally rented bike.
In a road trip rental, we will support you via phone to find the quickest and best solution. Mechanics are available all around Vietnam and at least a temporary solution can be given until a solid one with our partners is. We may communicate with locals around you to support in finding the quickest solution.
What if I have an accident with someone else?
The Extra Mile will not be responsible for damages to a third party should the customer have an accident. We will be involved to support to the best of our capacity our customer, and we will offer fair solutions as well as mediate with the third party. However, the damages and possible negotiations with a third party are solely responsibility of the customer.
The Extra Mile is well known for finding reasonable solutions and providing a very attentive support to customers in cases of accidents or conflicts with a third party regarding the motorbike’s rental.
What is the cancellation policy for bookings, will I get my deposit back?
We require a 100 USD pre-deposit to confirm a booking made within 45 days of the starting date. The remaining amounts for the rental and deposit are to be paid upon picking up the bike. This pre-deposit is non-refundable in case of a cancellation, and it is credited to the total deposit amount.
Do I get a refund if I return the bike early?
We refund 50% of the remaining period of time. This 50% is not calculated as half of the rental nor per the average daily price paid. We will count the number of unused days and the equivalent rental value based on our pricing table.
If the number of unused days is an odd number, we round to the lower even number. For example, if there are 13 unused days, we will count 12, hence we will reimburse 6 of those days.
We have a 2 days minimum rental policy, so bikes returned within 1 day will still be charged as 2 days.
What happens if the bike gets stolen?
In case of theft, the customer will be responsible to compensate us for the value of the bike based on the rental contract. We will support via the legal way with a police report and other documents needed, however from our experience stolen bikes never get found by the local police. The only way to prevent theft is to park safely and never leave the bike unattended on the street.
I’m in a rush to return the bike, how fast is the process?
We ask customers to consider a minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of the drop-off/return appointment. We need to follow a process to handle the deposit and potential damages. In most cases, without damages, the process is quite quick and may take less than 5 minutes. But, in some cases, we may need more time to check thoroughly.
It is important that the customer allows enough time for this procedure to be done properly. The Extra Mile is not responsible for the customer’s travel plannings or tight schedules, hence we request that a maximum of half an hour is allocated for the return process.
Can I leave my passport as a deposit?
At The Extra Mile we have a strict rule not to leave personal/important documents as deposit.
Should I return a full fuel tank?
Yes. We provide a full fuel tank at the beginning of the rental. We then expect the fuel tank returned full to us. If there is missing fuel, we will charge a fee per missing bar of fuel.
What are the most popular motorbike models for city rentals?
What are the differences between city rental and road trip rental?
City rentals are aimed at rentals staying within the city. We offer city rentals with a minimum of 2 days. Consider the range of 20km to 50km per day, with a total of 1,500km per month. For rentals under a month, we use the total limit of 50km/day, hence a 15 days rental will have a limit of 750kms.
Road-trip motorbike rentals are charged on a daily rate and have unlimited kilometers. You may leave the city and travel Vietnam. You cannot take our bikes across borders. The prices are higher, but this reflects the distance increase and the way we handle breakdowns and difficult situations that may occur outside the city.
What is provided with the bike?
Our bikes come with a phone holder, up to 2 helmets, an optional raincoat, a copy of the registration and the government insurance document.
We can also provide a storage rear boxes for a rental fee: 200,000 VND to 400,000 VND/month (and a flat fee for road trip rentals regardless of the lengh of rental).

We deliver and pick up for free in District 2 and a few central districts of HCMC. We charge a fee for further locations, fee depending on the total distances.
Can I extend my rental period if needed?
Our rental contracts include a renewal date rather than an end date. The customer may keep the same rental and renew with us, we will then confirm the next period’s rental amount.
Can you deliver/pick-up at the airport?
We can arrange to meet the customer at the gas station exiting the airport for free. For better convenience, the customer may opt to pay a 200,000 VND fee for us to deliver inside the airport in the parking area.

We will meet the customer at Starbucks and take you to the bike in the parking lot to deliver the bike. The customer must pay the parking fee which can be from 6,000 to 10,000 VND upon leaving the airport. We will charge a 200,000 VND fee to deliver and wait within the airport’s parking lot. We will charge 100,000 VND to pick up at an arranged time within the parking lot upon returning the bike.

The security will have a process to authorize the bike pick up, usually the verification of ownership documents and an ID. It is possible that you may need to reach out to us for confirmation of ownership.
Do you offer any discounts for multiple motorbike rentals?
Yes, we offer group discounts. Depending on the quantity and models selected we will make an offer for a group rental.
Can I travel by motorbike?
Yes, from 2025 we allow all bikes to access our road trip rentals. We have also added the damage waiver for the best convenience of the customer.
What are the electric scooters available for rent at The Extra Mile?
As of 2025, The Extra Mile gradually stopped working with Vinfast due to an outrageously low and decreasing quality of service. We now opt for the Dat Bike Quantum S3, a premium commuter that offers more power, comfort and high-tech features. However, this electric model requires a driving licence.
What makes The Extra Mile different from other companies?
We try and separate ourselves out by having well-maintained, high-quality motorbikes. That might seem like a generic answer, but the market is full of cheap and cheerful scooter rentals at very low prices. Many of these companies are maintaining their fleet of motorbikes on shoestring budgets.
We want our riders to be proud of the motorbike they are driving, and confident in its reliability. Our maintenance intervals are on a schedule, rather than a “fix when broken” basis.
We also offer premium motorbikes and scooters that other companies simply don’t provide.
Ultimately, we want to charge a premium for a premium service!
When are the payments due?
We take the first month’s rent upfront together with the security deposit, and from then we will remind you each month when your rental payment is due.
Most people choose to pay online by bank transfer, and don’t need to physically visit the shop every month!
Who is responsible for the bike’s maintenance?
We handle all maintenance and fixing of our bikes. Customers shall not handle it themselves unless explicitly agreed with us.
What do I do in case of a mechanical problem?
Call us or message us first to report the problem.
In a city rental, we will arrange to pick up the bike with issues and we will provide a replacement in the meantime. We will exchange back after solving the problem. More details in the city rentals FAQs.
In a road trip rental, we will assist on the phone to fin the quickest and best solution. More details in the road trip FAQs.
Do you attend 24/7 in case of an emergency?
We do during our working hours of 9am to 6pm. Overtime support is provided within the range of 8am to 9pm. Outside of this range, we will first provide support online or by phone to find a convenient solution. Most times the solution is parking the bike in a nearby parking lot to solve it the following morning. Should there be no available immediate solution and if the case is critical, then we will come to support.
Do I need to pay for overtime support?
If the case falls into our responsibility due to a mechanical problem or error of maintenance, we will cover the respective costs. If we find out the issue is due to a user error, then there will be an overtime fee. If the customer requests a normal (non-emergency) task in overtime, we will then ask for an overtime fee.
What do I do in the case of punctures?
There are mechanics everywhere in Vietnam, and they are cheap. The word to type is vá vỏ and the rate is usually around 20k to 50k. The customer is responsible for paying for this.
If you really are stuck, you can call us and we will rescue you for our standard callout fee of 150,000vnd.
What happens if I damage the bike in an accident?
If you have the damage waiver we will cover all fees in relation to fixing the motorbike. You don’t need to pay anything.
If you do not have the damage waiver, we will assess the fixing costs and your deposit will be used towards those costs. If the deposit covers, we will return the remaining deposit amount assuming the rental ends. If the customer wishes to keep renting, then the deposit must be completed again.
If the damage is higher than the security deposit, then the customer is responsible for completing the damage. We will not claim extra penalties for loss of use of the bike for future bookings, we only require the customer to pay for the damage caused to the bike during the rental.
Are prices including VAT for example if I ask for a red-invoice?
All our rental prices are VAT inclusive. We do issue red-invoice if you ask for it at the beginning of the process.
Note that we only issue VAT invoices for companies established in Vietnam with a local tax code only. We do not issue VAT invoices for companies established abroad without representation in Vietnam.

Do I get a refund if I return the bike early?
Yes, we offer a partial reimbursement on early refunds at 50% of the unused days.
Would you refuse service?
The Extra Mile reserves the right to refuse service for a few different reasons. As our demand drastically increased, frequently meeting our maximum capacity is a common happening for us. As a result, we permit ourselves to be selective with our customers in certain situations.
As a general rule, we do not tolerate any act of discrimination or offense towards our staff. This is especially valid regarding racism or xenophobia against Vietnamese nationals. At any moment, should we estimate that the beavior of a customer is not tolerable or could make our staff uncomfortable to the level of raising a concern, we will refuse service without the need of providing a detailed explanation.
Other reasons we may refuse service for are the potential mismatch between the customer expectation and the service we wish to provide. For example, should a customer show clear signs of attempting a road trip while requesting a city-rental contract, we will possibly refuse the booking.
Another example is the price expectation, for which we do not accept negotiations. We are free to offer deals as we see fit, however bargaining efforts will not be successful since we normally run at maximum capacity.
Do I need insurance when renting a motorbike in Vietnam?
The bike will have compulsory government insurance, but it doesn’t cover much. Travel insurance or personal insurance is recommended.
The Extra Mile offers Damage Waiver from 2025, this covers all damages to the bikes, with a few exceptions.
What does the government insurance cover?
Government insurance is used by the traffic police should there be an accident and both parties fail to find a friendly resolution. Should government insurance be activated, the traffic police will oversee communicating the final resolution to both parties.
Is there professional insurance for rental bikes?
No, in Vietnam insurance companies do not accept insuring rental bikes, hence the responsibility of damages relies on the authorized driver.
For this reason, we offer damage waiver ourselves. Customers may select and pay for this option on top of the rental fee.
Will my private insurance cover me in case of an accident?
Your private insurance should cover your personal injuries and perhaps material damage if you are riding legally. Our bikes comply with the necessary requirements, the rider is then responsible for having the appropriate driving licence.
Damage Waiver and Crashing the bike
The Extra Mile Damage Waiver removes all responsibility of the customer from damages to the rental motorbike in result of a crash. The Extra Mile will pay all damages that occur to the bike during the rental duration.
The damage waiver can be used for both city rentals and road trip rentals. However, it is not optional for road trip rentals that end in a city other than Ho Chi Minh City.
1. Go to a mechanic shop.
2. Call us for support and translation.
3. Keep the receipt. This will be refunded upon return of the motorbike.
Disclaimers
- For Per Day Rentals, the customer must select to upgrade all days of their motorbike rental, this includes returning late or extensions.
- For Long Distance Travel Packets, returning the motorbike late without damage waiver extension will void any damage cover.
- The Damage Waiver is non-refundable. but if you return early, we will calculate the damage waiver refund along with the rent.
- Swapping motorbikes > the second bike will not come with Damage Waiver.
Damage Waiver does not cover:
⊗ 3rd party damages

⊗ Loss/theft
⊗ Loss of bluecard / bluecard package we give clients
⊗ Loss of spare parts such as clutch plates and inner-tubes
⊗ The use of clutch plates or innertubes.

⊗ Luggage racks, phone mount (holder)
How to claim:
Providing the motorbike is returned to The Extra Mile we will honor the Damage Waiver. If the bike is lost / not returned the motorbike is considered “stolen” and the client owes the value of the stolen motorbike.
Major crashes
If we opt to replace a motorbike that has had a major crash with a replacement motorbike, then the customer is responsible for paying for another damage waiver on the replacement motorbike.
If The Extra Mile manages to fix a major crash (we will let you know if we think the damages are major), then we may ask you to pay for another damage waiver or return the rental motorbike to end the rental.
Are there schools in Vietnam where you can learn to ride a motorbike?
There are no dedicated motorbike schools in Vietnam, unlike in many Western countries. To get a motorbike license here, you don’t need to complete a specific number of training hours. See what licenses are valid to ride in Vietnam here.
Foreigners can learn by asking a local to teach them how to ride an automatic scooter in a quiet area. Once comfortable, they can gradually take short rides, avoiding busy traffic and large intersections.
For professional lessons, contact The Extra Mile. We offer beginner motorbike lessons on both automatic and manual bikes. Our trainers are experienced riders and qualified racers in both circuit and off-road racing.
Do you provide motorbike lessons?
Yes, we provide 90 minutes lessons in automatic and manual bikes of different sizes for fees of 700,000 VND for automatic and 800,000 VND for manual bikes.
Historically, people that struggle with one lesson only, had a second one to be confident.
Can you buy me a second-hand bike?
No, we have stopped the second-hand sourcing service. But, we occasionally sell second-hand motorbikes. You may inquire directly to know which bikes we are selling, thought the choice will be limited.
Can you buy me a new bike?
Yes, we offer a unique service where we buy a new motorbike and have it registered for you, we help avoid all of the difficulties that foreigners have when buying motorbikes in Vietnam. Full details here.
What’s the difference between automatic, semi-automatic, and manual motorbikes in Vietnam?
- Automatic: No gears, just twist and go.
- Semi-automatic: Gears controlled by foot, no clutch.
- Manual: Requires managing the clutch and gears like a manual car.
What fuel does a rental motorbike in Vietnam use?
Use 95-octane fuel, preferably from Petrolimex for better quality.
Where should I park?
The safest way to park is to park in a parking lot with a ticket.
Alternatively, several shops have a security guard that will guide you into parking. In some cases, shops do not have a security guard nor clear parking space. We recommend keeping the bike in a location where you can keep an eye on it.
In any case, do not leave the bike unattended on the streets, in Vietnam bikes not properly parked get stolen easily.
Be mindful that locals frequently leave bikes in some street areas, that is illegal parking and easily subject to theft or police confiscation.
Is it safe for foreigners to drive motorbikes in Vietnam?
Yes, but traffic can be chaotic. Be vigilant, and accidents are often minor.
What should I do in case of an accident while driving a rental motorbike?
Call your rental shop for guidance and support. Collect contact details from the other party for later arrangements.
What safety tips should I follow when riding a motorbike in Vietnam?
Drive defensively, stay alert at intersections, and keep an eye out for unpredictable behavior from others.
How do I avoid scams when renting a motorbike in Vietnam?
Scams often involve deposits. Always take photos or video of the bike, especially of existing damage, and test ride it. Check reviews online, as businesses with good ratings are more trustworthy.
What are the traffic laws in Vietnam for motorbikes?
Although many first time foreigners in Vietnam see a giant mess when they arrive in Vietnam and look at the traffic; there are strict traffic laws with detailed fines and regulations. We wrote a comprehensive article (link here) on that matter that you can use as a reference.
What to do if the Vietnamese traffic police stops you?
The police may stop you for an infraction, an administrative check (documents) or for an alcohol test. In case of an infraction, request proof of the infraction and then only provide your documents to the police. In an administrative check, you must provide the copy of registration as well as your licence (if the bike requires a licence to be driven), the rental contract could be needed as supporting documents for the copy of registration since the originals are normally required. In case of difficulties, give us a call to mediate with the police.
What happens if the police confiscated the bike?
The police may confiscate the bike should you commit a proven infraction that warrants a confiscation, such as excessive speed, alcohol content in the blood or not having a driving licence. In these cases, you will need to work with us to get the bike back from the police, in which case the customer will be responsible to cover all fees of the potential fine and other related fees.
What is the official process to pay the fines legitimately?
Are they supposed to write you a ticket and then you pay at local police station?
The official way is: you get a ticket by the police at the stop.
For this to happen, they first tell you the infraction and depending on the case they show proof (speeding, forgotten signal, illegal turn, etc.). Then, they hold on your licence or document available in exchange for the paper fine.
On the appointed date, you head to police station to provide the remaining documents and confirm the fine. The fine can either be paid online on the government’s website or at the indicated bank in cash.
How do I get a Vietnamese driving licence?
You may convert a foreign licence into a Vietnamese one or apply for a lifetime licence if you are fluent in Vietnamese.
A temporary residence card (TRC) is required for both of these cases. Tourists can drive with an international driving permit. Check all valid driving licences here.
What happens if I get fined on camera?
In a city rental, we will arrange to go with the customer to the respective police station and guide throughout the process of paying the fine. We will check periodically on the government’s system for potential fines on the rented motorbike’s licence plate.
For road-trip rentals, we will check in the government’s system by the time of return of the bike. In occasions, a fine may be issued up to 3 days after the infraction, hence it is possible that the bike was returned by then. Should it be the case, we will reach out to the customer to make a charge on their credit card to cover the cost of the fine. We will of course provide the necessary documentation.
